A Charles I West Country silver Apostle Spoon, St. John, c. 1640, by Edward Anthony, Exeter town mark struck in bowl, makers mark three times on stem, the gilt figural terminal with petal nimbus, the reverse of bowl pricked with initials 'M.P over F.A' and dated 1653, 7½in (19cm) long, 1.7ozt.
Provenance: from The Charles C Brian Collection. Mr Charles Brian was a born in Plymouth in 1916; he trained as a solicitor and joined his family law practice, C G Brian & Sons. He had a great love of Plymouth and Devon, and amassed a collection of Exeter and Plymouth silver. His particular interest was his collection of early West Country spoons.
